Deir al-Balah is situated in the central Gaza Strip, along the coastline of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. تقع دير البلح في وسط قطاع غزة على طول الساحل شرق البحر الأبيض المتوسط.
With a population of 2,560 in 1945, Deir al-Balah was a relatively large village. ارتفع هذا العدد ليصل إلى 2,560 نسمة عام 1945، أي أنّ دير البلح كانت قريةً كبيرةً نسبياً.
Deir al-Balah was captured by the British Army following the surrender of Khan Yunis on 28 February 1917. سقطت دير البلح في أيدي القوات البريطانية بعد استسلام خان يونس في 28 فبراير 1917.
After 27 years of Israeli occupation, Deir al-Balah became the first city to come under Palestinian self-rule in 1994. وبعد 27 سنة من السيطرة الإسرائيلية أصبحت دير البلح أول تخضع للحكم الذاتي الفلسطيني عام 1994.
Archaeological findings in Deir al-Balah revealed a large ancient Egyptian cemetery with graves containing jewelry and other personal belongings. كشفت الحفريّات في دير البلح عن وجود مقبرة مصرية قديمة كبيرة تضمّ قبوراً تحوي مجوهرات ومُتعلقات شخصيّة أخرى.
Deir al-Balah dates back to the Late Bronze Age when it served as a fortified outpost for the New Kingdom of Egypt. يعود تاريخ دير البلح إلى العصر البرونزي المتأخر حين كانت حصناً من حصون المملكة المصرية الحديثة.
In the 1931 British census of Palestine, there were only 10 Christians in Deir al-Balah out of a population of 1,587. ولكن في التعداد البريطاني للفلسطينيين عام 1931 كان هناك عشرة مسيحيين فقط في دير البلح من أصل 1,587 نسمة.
Deir al-Balah remained in Egyptian hands until around 1150 BC when the Philistines conquered the southern coastal area of Canaan. ظلّت دير البلح تحت سيطرة المصريين حتى حوالي عام 1150 قبل الميلاد، حين غزا الفلستيون المنطقة الساحلية الجنوبية من أرض كنعان.
In 1994 Deir al-Balah was the first city to officially come under the control of the Palestinian National Authority as a result of the Gaza–Jericho Agreement. وفي عام 1994 كانت دير البلح أول مدينة تخضع رسميّاً لسيطرة السلطة الوطنية الفلسطينية نتيجة اتفاق غزة أريحا.
